How a Ductless Mini-Split Works
It might sound complicated, and installation does take some time, but a ductless mini-split system is actually quite simple. The unit has two parts – one outside and one inside – that work together to remove hot air from inside your home, cool it off, and return to your house.
The key is the copper tubing that moves the refrigerant from the outdoor unit to the inside portion, cooling the air in the process.
Your ductless mini-split’s outdoor portion contains a fan, a compressor, and the refrigerant. It’s the compressor’s job to get the refrigerant circulating before it cools as it passes through an expansion valve. The cold liquid then moves inside to the unit’s coils.
These coils sit in the wall-mounted indoor section of your ductless mini-split. The inside unit sucks up hot air, cools it over the coils, and then spits it out again. The remaining refrigerant, which now contains heat from the air, then moves back outside, where the process begins again.
All of these processes come together to create a remarkably efficient cooling system that keeps the room where it is installed at a comfortable temperature. You can also install these wall-mounting interior units in multiple rooms, providing a full-house cooling solution.

About Ductless Mini-Split Systems
As with anything else in life, you’ll want to learn a bit about ductless mini-splits before putting up your hard-earned money. After all, there’s no point in paying for one of these products if it isn’t the right fit for your home.
The first thing you should know is that these systems are nearly silent, as they run at about 25 decibels. If you have children or are a light sleeper, knowing that your unit won’t disrupt you with loud noises is good news.
It’s also worth noting that ductless mini-splits are don’t require much maintenance. You should clean the filter about once a month in a process that’s as simple as unclipping an interior component, running it underwater, and letting it dry. Other than that, it’s recommended that you bring in a technician once a year to complete some routine maintenance, including flushing out your condensate line, to ensure the system is working to its full capacity.
Other than that, these systems are self-sufficient, and you shouldn’t have any problems with yours once it’s up and running.
